Maritime forests protect Tybee island's shorelines from ongoing movement of the coast. These estuaries grown along coastal barrier islands and support great diversity of plants and animals.  Much of Tybee Island's maritime forest has disappeared.  Here, you see the edge of a forest, teeming with life.
